Sanga questions Sri Lanka’s Selection & Decision-Making after Englant Defeat

Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara has questioned the national team’s selection decisions, consistency and fitness following another comprehensive defeat to England, saying Sri Lanka remain far from becoming the T20 side they aspire to be.

Speaking during the post-match analysis, Sangakkara said England’s dominance had exposed significant differences between the two teams, particularly in batting, physical conditioning and tactical awareness.

“They are miles apart,” Sangakkara said, agreeing with fellow commentator Nasser Hussain’s assessment of the gap between the sides.

Sangakkara questioned the decision to move Kamil Mishara to No. 3 and leave out Maheesh Theekshana, whom he described as Sri Lanka’s best spinner, in favour of a different bowling option.

“There has to be some consistency in the decision-making as well,” he said.

“You’ve got to really trust your best players, identify your players properly, then trust them and understand where they need to develop.”

The former captain also highlighted fitness and physicality as major areas requiring improvement, stressing that Sri Lanka must develop the ability to strike the ball effectively without sacrificing batting technique.

He called for improvements in bowling intelligence, reading match situations and setting appropriate fields.

“Yes, they have talent, but they need to quickly refine it into power, ability and then convert it into wins,” Sangakkara said.

Meanwhile, former England captain Nasser Hussain delivered a critical assessment of Sri Lanka’s batting, saying the current side had fallen significantly below the standards established by previous generations.

Hussain recalled watching Sri Lankan greats such as Aravinda de Silva and Sangakkara, who could score boundaries through timing and placement rather than attempting to overpower every delivery.

He said Sri Lanka’s current batters appeared to be trying to hit too hard, losing their shape when facing pace instead of using the speed of the ball to their advantage.

Hussain also pointed to the statistical differences between the teams, including Sri Lanka’s 50 dot balls and England’s superior boundary-hitting.

“In every metric today, England completely outplayed them,” he said.

Sangakkara said Sri Lanka’s captain Charith Asalanka had also acknowledged that the team was not yet close to the T20 side it wanted to become.

England secured the series 2-0 with one match remaining, extending their winning streak against Sri Lanka in T20 internationals to 14 matches. (Newswire)
