Sanudula and Susal come forward; Indians still on top

Sri Lanka’s promising chess player Sanudula Dahamdi came back strongly to beat high-rank Iranian Melika Mohammadi in the 7th round of the Asian Junior Chess Championship women’s category which is now in progress at Citrus Hotel, Waskaduwa. 14-year-old Sanudula from Musaeus College already shares the third position with Melika with two rounds to spare in this tournament. Oshini Gunawardena, from Ferguson High School, lost to UAE player Darwish Al Maamari having 3.5 points went down to 9th place after the 7th round. Indian Women International Master Shri Savitha drew her game with Iranian Women FIDE Master Mehdian Anousha, still managed to stay on top place with collecting six points out of seven games and while Indian K. Priyanka who had an easy victory over Sri Lakan lower rate player Sayumi Gamage is in second place having 5.5 points after seven round.

The open category has always been a tough battle among the players while India’s V.S. Rahul kept his place on top by defeating Sri Lanka’s top-seed player Ranindu Liyanage. Rahul already collected 6.5 points out of 7 games while Indian G, B Harshawardena having 5.5 points was lying in second place.

Sri Lankan 15-year-old Fide Master Susal de Silva was the best among the Sri Lankan players in the open category and was able to get five points also shared third place with Indian International Masters Mitrabha Guha and Vardhaan Nagpal. Rahul of India beat Sri Lanka National Chess Champion, Ranindu Liyanage and he has scored 6.5 points out of 7 games to lead the open category while Indian G.B Harshawardena having 5.5 points was in second place.

Susal de Silva of Nalanda College was able to beat his teammate Nabil Naza to come forward and he has a tough challenge in his next round as he will meet leading Indian player V. S Rahul. The young Susal’s performance was also very high so far in this tournament. Earlier, he drew with Indian Vardhaan Nagpal and Iranian Orimi Mahdi in this tournament while he was able to record victories against fellow Sri Lankan competitors to come forward.

The chess players from five countries India, Iran, Bangladesh, UAE, and host Sri Lanka are competing in this Asian Junior Tournament which is conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka. The winners in two categories open and women are offered a Grandmaster norm and International Master Title by the World Chess Federation. Even two tied players to top points will also be awarded International Master Titles. Otherwise, the Silver and Bronze Medalists are offered International Master Norms.
