Sasanka Hewage the rugby and athletic star

Nineteen year old, Sasanka Hewage is a Grade Thirteen Student of Dharmaraja College, Kandy in the Commerce Stream and at present he is the captain of Dharmaraja Rugby team and apart from rugby he is also an outstanding athlete.

Sasanka is popularly known as SK to his friends. He started Rugby under the coaching of Nimal Wijesiri and his team became Under Thirteen All Island Group Champions in under 14 level, All Island Plate Champions and the winners were Wesley College team. At the Under 16 level he was the Captain of the School Rugby team which became Plate Champions in the year 2016 and in 2017 his team became Runners-up at the Cup Championship and Wesley team won the championship. At the Under 19 age group he was in the School Rugby team which won the Group Championship at the All Island School League Rugby Tournament in the year 2019 and the team won the Plate Championship at the Central Province Rugby Sevens and Sasanka won School Colours in 2019. In Rugby at present he is Coached by Lasantha de Costa, As an Under 12 athlete he won Merit Award for 100 Metre Race at the District Athletic Meet after which he was able to help the College to win the First place in both 4×100 and 4×400 Relay at the Kandy District Athletic Meet at the Under 15 age group.

His Relay team consisted of Sasanka Hewage, Kasun Herath,Saumya Wijesiri and Thenuka Wickremasinghe and they participated at the Sir John Tarbet Athletic Meet and at the All Island Relay Carnival. Sasanka won College Colours as a Junior and Senior Athlete and he is the President of the School sports council for the year 2022.

Sasanka is a member of the Board of Prefects as well and in addition he is a Silver Star Winner in Scouting and his intention is to continue rugby and athletics as well as higher Studies and he is thankful to his coaches and his parents for the guidance given to him.
