A bribery case filed against three accused including former Minister Johnston Fernando for excluding Sathosa employees from their duties and engaging them in political activities was fixed to deliver its order regarding the preliminary objections on September 22 by the Colombo High Court.

When the case was taken up before Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja, the Bribery Commission filed counter objections over the preliminary objections made by the defence over the case. At a previous occasion, the defence appearing for former Minister Johnston Fernando made a preliminary objection before court that the charges in the case cannot be pursued against the accused further.

After considering facts, the Colombo High Court Judge fixed the case for September 22 to deliver its order regarding the preliminary objections.

At a previous hearing, indictments were handed over to the accused and following serving indictments, they were released on cash bail of Rs.50,000 and two sureties of Rs. 500,000 each by the Colombo High Court.

The Colombo High Court Judge also imposed a travel ban against the accused. The case was filed against former Minister Johnston Fernando when he was acting as the Trade Minister, former CWE (Lak Sathosa) Chairman Eraj Fernando and former Minister’s Private Secretary Raj Mohideen Mohammad Zakeer for allegedly causing an unlawful loss to the government by employing the employees of the Co-operative Wholesale Establishment (CWE) for election work.

The Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption filed these corruption cases against three accused under Section 70 of the Bribery Act on four charges.
