Saunders notched up a hard fought 1 goal to nil win over Victory to conclude their final league game on a winning note to qualify for the quarter final stage of the under-19 Inter Club Soccer Tournament played for the ‘Expolanka Youth Cup’ at City League grounds yesterday.
Saunders chances of qualifying for the next round of the competition was in the balance, if they had lost yesterday they would have been ousted from the tournament. The lads rose to the occasion and put up a herculean effort before winning by a narrow margin. This win eventually enabled them to post their third win and score nine points to head Group ‘A’, as Maligawatta Youth who were on top until this win, went down to second position with eight points.
Saunders found their rhythm midway through the tournament faced a daunting task to qualify for the next round of the tournament. They possess some talented young lads who played their hearts out to maintain the winning momentum.
Mohamed Umar’s goal in the 13th minute of the game was the only scoring opportunity.
His header bisected the rival defense off a well timed kick from the left flank from M.N. Murshid. The rest of the match could not produce any scoring opportunities as both sides were equally matched in both attack and defense with some scintillating moves, which however was unable to produce any results.
