SCP discusses expansion of higher education opportunities

The Select Committee of Parliament (SCP) chaired by Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, PC met in Parliament recently (17) to make recommendations to expand higher education opportunities in Sri Lanka.

The contribution of non-governmental higher education institutes and the opportunities available to make the sector more efficient were discussed at the meeting.

Representatives of Non-Government Higher Education Institutes in Sri Lanka such as Nagananda Institute, SLINTE higher education institute, ISOFT Metro Campus, Saegis Campus, ICBT, Royal Institute and IChem were present at the meeting and presented their views on the opportunities, obstacles and the way forward to expand the sector.

The Committee Chair requested the representatives to submit recommendations in writing regarding the changes and developments to be made in future.

The representatives said that while there are opportunities to carry out innovations and new initiatives in the higher education field, the legal provisions to carry them are not sufficient. They also expressed the need for a more flexible approach to facilitate the sector.

Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, State Minister Dr. Seetha Arambepola, Members of Parliament Rauff Hakeem, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Eran Wickramaratne and Prof. Charitha Herath were present.
