The Women’s Empowerment Bill, which was approved with conditions, on May 27, by the Sectoral Oversight Committee (SOC) on Children, Women and Gender, Chaired by MP Ms Thalatha Athukorala, is to be presented in Parliament today (4) for its Second Reading.
SOC Chairperson said the Bill will be approved on the condition that the Rules and Regulations related to the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, signed by the Government of Sri Lanka, should be prepared as soon as possible. Moreover, the SOC Chairperson stressed that the amendments proposed by the WPC and the SOC should also be included during the Committee stage.
Secretary to the Ministry of Women, Child Affairs and Social Empowerment, Yamuna Perera, assured the Committee that she would work to present the relevant Cabinet paper within two weeks, stressing the need to prepare Rules and Regulations regarding the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
SOC Chairperson stressed that the complete benefit of the above Bill can only be achieved by preparing the Rules and Regulations for the implementation of the Convention.
Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus (WPC) Chairperson Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle, Co-Chairperson, Dr. Seetha Arambepola, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and SOC Member D. Weerasingha, along with officials of the Ministry of Women, Child Affairs and Social Empowerment, the Attorney General’s Department and the Legal Draftsman’s Department were present at this Committee meeting.
