The Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Reforms and Electoral Studies, Manjula Gajanayake reiterated that the security alert and travel advisories issued by the United States, United Kingdom and Russia regarding a terrorist attack targeting tourist locations in the Arugambay area may be the first step of a plot to disrupt the forthcoming parliamentary poll.

Sri Lanka’s next parliamentary election is to be held three weeks from now [on November 14, 2024].

The polls monitor said that the government should also investigate the impact the travel advisories would have on the nation’s tourist industry and economy and who the ultimate beneficiary or beneficiaries would be of the resulting outcome.

He stressed that it is important that the government take immediate action to coordinate with the countries that revealed this threat and thwart it as soon as possible.
