Dasun Shanaka, the incumbent Sri Lanka Twenty20 captain, says that in addition to the team which participated in this year’s Twenty20 World Cup, several other senior players should also be included in the next edition of this tournament to be held in Australia next year. He made this statement while speaking at a post-media briefing after the West Indies match in which his team snatched a convincing 20-run victory under lights at the picturesque Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

The young Lanka brigade excelled in all aspects – batting, bowling and fielding – against the defending champs of the T20 World Cup. However, Sri Lanka failed to secure the required points and were unable to qualify for the semi-finals of the Super 12 stage, and the match against West Indies was the final outing of this edition of the World Cup. Man of the Match Charith Asalanka is currently the highest run scorer in the series (231 runs) with two half centuries, while Pathum Nissanka (221) is playing second fiddle with three half centuries.

“We need to combine the senior players with these new talented players to strengthen our hands, which will enable us to see better results in the future. Also, it is very important to get the support of talented advisors like Mahela Jayawardena. Working with Mahela gave us a lot of confidence, especially the new players. As a team we played well. Despite being unable to qualify for the semi-finals, all the players are happy they gave their best in the series,” said skipper Dasun Shanaka.

“Leadership was not a burden to me. But having to change my position from time to time was a problem. To be competitive lots of commitment had to be made. I worked under several leaders and their demeanor and style of play strengthened my journey. Spectator support was a pillar of strength to us in every match. People trusted us. That trust will never be broken. I thank everyone,” he further stated.

The media inquired about coach Mickey Arthur’s plight, whether his contract will be extended? “I don’t know about it. It is decided by the management of Sri Lanka Cricket. I would like to introduce Pathum Nissanka as the best resource we have created in this tournament. He is a young player with a clear future. We have a lot of players who are around 24-years-old. They are the resources needed for the future of Sri Lanka Cricket,” concluded Dasun Shanaka.
