The Select Committee of Parliament to look into and report to Parliament its recommendations to ensure gender equity and equality with special emphasis on looking into gender-based discriminations and violations of women’s rights in Sri Lanka organized a Sensitization and Information Sharing Session on Disability Rights and Inclusion for Members of Parliament.
This session was held in Parliament when the Select Committee of Parliament met on August 23, 2023 Chaired by Dr. Harini Amarasuriya in the absence of its Chair Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle.
The Session held was conducted by Nadege Riche, International Consultant on Disability Inclusion, NDI. She drew the attention of the Committee of how Parliament as an institution could look into being more progressive and inclusive in order to ensure disability rights. It was also stated that around one billion people live with some form of disabilities worldwide and this represents 15% of the global population.
It was also stated that in low- and middle-income countries, women comprise three quarters of persons with disabilities.
An activity to better comprehend the session was also held with the participation of those present at the Committee meeting held.
State Minister Dr. Seetha Arambepola, MPs Eran Wickramaratne and Rohini Kumari Wijerathna were present at this meeting.
