Seven senior fishermen, who had gone to sea in a multi-day fishing vessel who had ragged a novice in the middle of the sea for a month, were arrested and produced before the Kalutara Additional Magistrate A. N. R. Perera after arriving at Beruwala Fisheries Harbour.
They have been ordered to be remanded till July 31.
A young fisherman who was an apprentice in a group of eight who had sailed from the Beruwala fishing port a month ago and went to the deep sea, was attacked by the group on the same vessel during his first voyage, subjected to various persecutions and submerged in the sea for hours before being rescued again.According to the complaint that the young man made to the
Beruwala police subsequent to reaching the shore, saying that he had been harassed, the suspects involved were arrested and brought to court.Police said that the young man who faced the
incident has been treated in hospital too. The Beruwala police have revealed the facts to the court stating that seven people including the main fisherman of the multi-day fishing vessel, who live
in Ambepitiya and other areas of Beruwala are the accused.
The complainant, a young fisherman residing at Moratumulla Moratuwa, had joined the voyage with seven senior fishermen from the Beruwala area.
Officer-In-Charge of the Crimes Division Inspectors Gayan Krishantha and Chandana Tennakoon had taken the suspects into custody on the instructions of the Officer-In-Charge of the Beruwala Police Station Lalith Pathmakumara and produced them at the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court.
