Shani calls for arrest of Commissioners

The former director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Shani Abeysekera, through his lawyer, requested the Court of Appeal yesterday (11) to issue warrants for the arrest of the commissioners of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry including retired Supreme Court Judge Upali Abeyratne, who investigated cases of political victimization for not appearing before the Court despite summons being issued.

The request was made by lawyer A. Devendra, who appeared for the petitioner Shani Abeysekera, when a petition filed complaining that the Chairman and the members of the said commission, had disregarded the agreements given before the Court.

Ikram Mohammed, PC, who appeared for the respondents, stated that objections and a motion have been filed against this petition.

Summons were issued on October 7, 2022, ordering these respondents to appear in this Court. According to the summons, these respondents were ordered to appear in the Court of Appeal yesterday (11).
