The Colombo Magistrate’s Court today fixed July 24 for the further trial of a case filed against Shashi Weerawansa, wife of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, over allegations of obtaining a diplomatic passport using forged documents.
The order was issued by Colombo Additional Magistrate Liyan Warusawithana when the case was taken up today.
Shashi Weerawansa, who is out on bail, appeared before court.
During an earlier hearing, the defence sought access to inspect a computer system linked to documents connected to the case, arguing that the documents were computer-generated and that the trial could not proceed without such access under the Evidence Ordinance.
However, the Deputy Solicitor General appearing for the Criminal Investigation Department told court today that the documents were not computer-generated but had been scanned and stored in a database.
The Deputy Solicitor General also informed court that a notice under the Evidence (Special Provisions) Act would be filed to facilitate the defence request to inspect the relevant computer system.
Defence counsel said submissions on the matter would be made through a motion.
The Magistrate thereafter ordered the case to be called again on July 24. (Newswire)
