Shenal Botheju made a superb unbeaten knock of 102 as St. Peter’s recorded an easy five-wicket win over defending champions Mahinda College in their Under 19 Division One Tier ‘B’ quarter-final cricket fixture played at Darley Road yesterday.
Mahindians were invited to bat first, scoring 192 all out in their 50 overs while Peterites reached their target more comfortably with 8.1 overs to spare while left-hander Shenal Botheju was leading the way with a fluent century. The number three batter Botheju played a fluent knock striking 10 boundaries in his unbeaten 124-ball innings. He also added 58 runs for the second wicket with Rusanda Gamage (23) and a further 57-run fourth-wicket stand with skipper Wanuja Sahan who scored 30 in 34 balls with 3 fours and a six. Mahinda off-spinner Hiruna Mandila was the only successful bowler with 2 for 26.
Earlier, Mahinda opener Pramesh Madubashana 32 with a four and a six in 61 balls while Hiruna Kalupahana top-scored 45 with 2 fours and a six in 79 balls to build up their innings. Hiruna Mandila also made a useful knock of 37 with 3 fours and six in 43 balls but that was not enough to pose a challenging target for the Peterites. Danula Hemananda, the left-arm medium paceman was the most successful bowler taking 3 for 22 while spinners Wanuja Sahan, Shenon Rodrigo, and Niman Umesh made good supporting roles by taking two wickets each.
