St. Joseph’s skipper Shevon Daniel, produced a superb all-round performance, scoring an unbeaten 85 and taking 4 for 25 as they recorded an easy six-wicket win over Wesley College in their Inter-School Under 19 Division One Limited Overs quarter-final cricket fixture played at Thurstan grounds yesterday.
Wesley were invited to bat first, making 167 (all out) in 47 overs while Josephians reached their winning target in 36.1 overs with six wickets in hand to ensure their semi-final berth. Wesley openers Chamath Dias (30) and Skipper Sahil Dias (29) made a solid start adding 53 in 15.3 overs, but Josephian skipper Shevon Daniel himself raised to attack with his off-spin using his experience to grab both openers’ wickets in his first four overs, posing a good challenge to the opponents.
Ashan Isira (23) and Anudith Wickramasinghe (22) also added 42 runs for the third wicket. However, Josephian bowlers especially the two National Under 19 spinners, Dunith Wellalage and Daniel, came up with excellent spells to take 4 wickets each. Wesley had to be satisfied with 176 (all out) in 47 overs. Daniel was more economical with figures of 4 for 25 in his 9-over spell with two maidens while leg spinner Wellalage gave a good supporting role, taking 4 for 37 in his 10-over spell while 16-year-old leggie Yenula Dewthusa also captured 2 for 33.
St. Joseph’s chasing their target of 168 runs, openers Sadeesh Jayawardena (33) and Hiruna Kapurubandara (28) associated a good foundation to add 57 runs while Skipper Shevon Daniel played an anchor role, finishing the game with a sparkling knock of an unbeaten 85 in 75 balls striking 6 fours and five sixes.

Meanwhile, Mahanama College notched up six-wicket win over St. Benedict’s, Kotahena, in their other Division One quarter-final game played at Ananada Mawatha. Koojana Perera, the Mahanama all-rounder was the match winner with impressive figures of 5 for 18 in his ten-over spell while scoring a superb knock of an unbeaten 47 with five fours to seal their victory in 24th over.
Earlier, St. Benedict’s wh batted first were struggling from the start. They were reeling with 25 for 8 in 12.3 overs and right-arm medium paceman Koojana Perera made an early breakthrough to get the first four wickets to shatter Ben’s top order. Yohan Soyza the number seven batter top-scored 31 with 2 fours in 83 balls also added the only successful 53-run last-wicket partnership with Aneesha Madumalka who scored an unbeaten 18 in 60 balls to reach 94 (all out) in 38.5 overs. Koojana Perera finished with 5 for 18 with a good supporting role from Omesh Udara who took 3 for 19.
Mahanama reached their winning target in 38.5 overs with opener Koojana Perera, once again, making 47 (n.o.) to strengthen the side while Viranga Yeshan scored 22 to steer their win to qualify for the semi-final.
Meanwhile, Thurstan beat Lumbini College by 10 runs on a D/L method in their Division One Tier ‘B’ quarter-final match played at Campbell Place. Thurstan scored 228 all out in 49.4 overs while Lumbini had to get 169 in 40 overs and managed to get 158 for 5 wickets.
St. Sebastian’s, Katuneriya beat Vidyartha Kandy by 10 runs in their Division Two Tier ‘A’ quarter-final game played at Moratuwa.
