Shooter misses target inside Mount Courts
A gunman opened fire at a Special Task Force informant who was in the dock appearing in a case of embezzlement pending in the Mount Lavinia Court and fled the scene yesterday noon.
No one was injured in the shooting. It is suspected that the shooter missed the target as he was nervous.
Intelligence agencies have received information that the , the attack was carried out according to the plan of an underworld criminal Harak Kata who is hiding in Dubai.
Peramuna Kamkanamla Predeep (36) of Ibbawala Weligama was his target.He appeared for a case pending against him in the Mount Lavinia court for defrauding Rs 48,500.
Police said that a case has been filed against him in the Mount Lavinia court for defrauding money through ATM from a retired soldier by promising him to provide a three-wheeler from the Ranaviru Seva Authority.
In addition , he had been charged of possessing a locally made revolver . Police said that this individual had been a close associate of underworld gangster Harak Kata.
Police stated that this person has worked as an informant of the Police Special Task Force and for that reason he has received life threats from Harak Kata.
Associates of Harak Kata had tried to kill him on several occasions, but he had managed to escape unhurt.Police said that once a house where he was staying was shot and he survived by escaping through the sliding door.
Based on this situation, sources said that when this person comes to Court, he will even get protection from the Special Task Force.
A senior officer said he is unprotected only when he is inside court. Police added that he gets special protection when he comes to and leaves the court.
The person who is the target of the underworld gangster did not believe that he would be shot at in Court because there were police and prison guards inside.
The shooter was sitting on a bench near the door of the court hall and when the informant entered the dock, he immediately stood up and fired at him.
It has also been found that the shot did not hit him because he fell down at the same time.Police added that although the second shot was fired, the target had gone wrong.Thereafter he had run out of the court hall and went to the police post on the court premises and shot again and fled.
When this shooting took place, many police and prison officials were present in court, but none of them had fired at the shooter.
Special Task Force personnel who were standing outside the court complex, did not know what had happened inside the court. It is said that the Special Task Force has taken steps to take person , who survived the shooting, to a security post after providing strict security.
Over ten lawyers,members of the court staff and civilians were at the court premises when the incident took place.
Since the security cameras recorded the suspect fleeing and arriving at the court premises, the police have started investigations.
A senior police officer of Mt. Lavinia Division said that four police teams have been deployed to arrest the fugitive shooter.
