Shortage of 52 medicines, orders placed for them, substitutes available – Ramesh
Health Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said in Parliament yesterday that there is a shortage of 52 essential medicines in government hospitals. However, there is no shortage of life-saving medicines.
He said that these scarce medicines have already been ordered and substitute medicines are available for them in hospitals.
The Minister said that nine draft Bills related to the health sector will be presented to Parliament in the near future. These Bills will help to modernise the health service in Sri Lanka to suit the present. Through that, it is hoped to make good reforms within the Health Ministry for the health service of the country.
The Minister said this while participating in the debate on two Medical (Amendment) Bills(Second Reading).
He said that there was a shortage of 250 essential medicines last year and it has reduced to 52 now.
He also pointed out that the doctors who left the country in the last two months have returned to Sri Lanka and started working and it is a good trend.
