Showers expected in several provinces of Sri Lanka today

The Department of Meteorology says atmospheric conditions are getting favorable for afternoon thunderstorms in the Northern, North-central, Eastern and Uva provinces in the next few days, starting from today (03).

As such, several spells of showers will occur in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts today. 

Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the Uva, Central and Eastern provinces and in the Polonnaruwa and Mullaitivu districts after 2.00 pm.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers may occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Winds will be South-westerly. Wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be rough at times. The sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar may be fairly rough at times.

The wave height may increase about 2.0 – 2.5 meters in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara. (Newswire)
