Aashinsa Herath, the up-and-coming Sri Lankan shuttler, taking part in the Indian International Challenge Badminton Tournament at Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bangalore, made an impressive tournament debut, defeating an Indian shuttler in straight two sets yesterday.
Aashinsa faced off against Indian player Shreyansh Jaiswal in the first round of the men’s singles. The first set was a hard-fought battle that ended 21/18, but Aashinsa Herath displayed more confidence in the second set, securing a 21/13 victory over Jaiswal to enter the second round which was scheduled to be held yesterday night. Viren Nettasinghe also had his second-round game yesterday night.
Aashinsa Herath coached by Yukthi Perera and Hasitha Chanaka is accompanied by Viren Nettasinghe, a senior player of the National team. Both players are getting good exposure from this tournament, which attracts many top Indian shuttlers, with a few from Singapore, Thailand and Japan.
“I have the support of my parents, Sri Lanka Badminton and my school. Both Viren and I are expected to play in the upcoming Raipur tournament which commences on October 31,” Aashinsa said. Following the Bangalore tournament, Aashinsa Herath is expected to return home to participate in the Royal-S. Thomas’ annual Badminton tournament and then come back once again for the Raipur Tournament.
