SI held for soliciting bribe
The Kirindiwela Police arrested a Sub-Inspector working at the Kirindiwela Police station for soliciting a bribe of Rs.1,000 from a man who took his daughter on a motorcycle without a helmet and stealing two kilos of chicken from the refrigerator of the Police canteen.
This Sub-Inspector took a bribe of Rs. 1,000 by force on June 18 and the chicken theft took place on August 18.
On June 18, this officer who was engaged in duty with a constable had stopped a motorcycle that was travelling on the road near Kirindiwela town. A man, his wife and small daughter were traveling on the motorcycle. The daughter was not wearing a helmet. The sub-inspector who blamed the parents, has asked the motorcyclist for a bribe of Rs.1,000 for not issuing a fine. When the man did not agree, the sub-inspector took the money by force. The motorcyclist, who was a resident of Halthota Wewelpitiya, had lodged a complaint with the Kirindiwela Police about this. But, no proper investigation of the matter had taken place.
Meanwhile, on August 16, this sub-inspector has stolen two kilos of chicken from the refrigerator in the canteen of the junior officers of the police station. The police officer in charge of the canteen had informed about this to his superior and the sub-inspecter was arrested in connection with the complaint of the bribe.
