Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Vijitha Herath yesterday announced during the Cabinet press conference that Sri Lanka’s State Intelligence Service (SIS) received information about a planned attack from a foreign intelligence agency.

In response, the National Security Council was convened to make prompt decisions regarding the threat, he said.

The Minister said that several suspects have been arrested and presented to the courts, with further investigations ongoing.

He emphasized that the intelligence agencies involved do not represent any foreign influence against the country. Additionally, he noted that while the United States issued a caution about travel to the Arugam Bay area, no official travel ban has been imposed.

Minister Herath further said that the Police have begun investigations into reports that tourists, including Israeli nationals, may be engaging in activities beyond leisure, such as business and religious practices, while on tourist visas in Arugam Bay.  He further noted that past incidents have indicated some tourists might be involved in business, religious, or even illegal activities while visiting.

He clarified that currently, all foreign nationals in Arugam Bay, including Israelis, are registered on tourist visas. However, authorities are urging the public to report any instances of tourists participating in activities not permitted under tourist visa regulations.

Minister Herath also stated that hotels in the area have been advised to notify authorities if any guests are found engaging in employment, business, or other inappropriate activities for visitors in Sri Lanka.
