Sisters attack sergeant in Police Station, granted bail
Police information revealed that two women who had come to visit an arrested drunk driver behaved violently inside the Eheliyagoda Police station, pushing a sergeant to the ground and assaulting him.
This incident had taken place on Saturday (22) night.
The two women involved in this assault and the husbands of those women, who came with them, had been controlled and arrested by the Police after much effort.
These people are residents of Panagoda, Kapurugoda Road. The Police said that they had gone to bathe in the Kuruwita Bopath Ella Falls in the morning and had had fun drinking alcohol. They had been travelling back to their homes in a van. The Police said that while on the way, they had been teasing and scolding people on the road and in other vehicles using obscene words.
According to information received by the Police regarding the behaviour of these people, the officers of the traffic department of Eheliyagoda Police had stopped this van in their Police division. It was discovered then that the driver was drunk. Accordingly, the Police officers had brought the driver to the Police station along with the van to take legal action against him. The Police said that when the drunk driver was about to be put in the Police cell, a person in the van had started behaving violently, so he too had been put in the cell, to bring him under control. Police information revealed that the two women and the husband of one of the women who had been inside the Police station had started shouting and abusing the Police officers.
Police revealed that a sergeant who was reporting for night mobile patrol duty had come into the Police station and told the shouting crowd to leave the place. Then the two women had slapped the sergeant on his cheek, clung to him and brought him down on to the ground. At that time, the husband of one of the women had also been involved in assaulting the sergeant, the Police said.
A top-ranking Police officer said that the sergeant’s face and limbs were scratched due to these attacks.
The officer further stated that the driver of the van that caused the incident was produced in Court and fined for drunken driving. The suspect who was put into the Police cell initially and the two women were granted bail and the husband of one of the women was remanded in custody. The officer said further that the two women are sisters.
