Six elephants died in two incidents after colliding with trains in Galgamuwa and Palugaswewa. Four elephants were killed when a herd of wild elephants collided with the night mail train travelling from Kankesanthurai to Colombo near Galgamuwa. The accident had happened about one kilometre away from the Galgamuwa railway station. Part of the engine of the train has also been damaged due to the collision. However, the train resumed its journey after about an hour’s delay.
The other accident happened when a herd of wild elephants collided with the Meenagaya train running from Colombo Fort to Polonnaruwa in the area between Kekirawa and Palugaswewa. Two wild elephants died in the accident.
