Six festivals from January to March to promote Southern Coast to international tourism market

In a bid to promote the Southern coast to the international tourism market, the Ministry of Tourism has teamed up several hotels to host six international festivals from January through March of 2024. The event has been named as the ‘Galle Concerto’.

The six festivals are in Art, Food, Literature, and Music and Sri Lanka hopes that these events will encourage tourists to stay longer in the Southern coast and attract guests from other places as well. An official from the Ministry of Tourism said that the festivals are independently organized to amplify the positive economic and touristic impact of cultural programming.

“The event is being conceived by President Ranil Wickremesinghe and supported by the Presidential Secretariat, SLTPB and SLTDA, and other ministries and local governmental bodies.”

The first event (a three day programme) Rhythms of Paradise, will be held from January 12 to 14 at Koggala Air Force Base and the Martin Wickramasinghe Museum and will highlight Sri Lanka’s rich cultural, maritime and natural heritage focusing on drums, dance, classical and contemporary Sri Lankan literature, and biodiversity programming. The second event would be Gourmet Galle, held from January 13 to March 30 in Galle. Star chefs from London, New York, Sydney, Singapore including Darina Allen, O Tama Carey, Karan Gokani, Mark Hix, Peter Kuruwita, Jeremy Lee, James Lowe, Rishi Neleendra, Hari Nayak, Nisha Parmar, J. Ryall,

Cynthia Shanmugalingam, Mandy Yin will attend this event.

The third event ‘Opera’ will be held at the Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle from January 19 to 21. The inaugural Southern Book Fair will be the fourth event which will be held from January 19 to 28 in Galle. Held in the heart of iconic Galle, the Southern Book Fair will offer a platform for publishers, editors, aspiring authors, and avid readers to develop new partnerships, fostering opportunities to celebrate our own rich literary heritage, and introducing contemporary works from diverse voices around the world.

This will be followed with the Galle Literary Festival, from January 25 to 28 ‘24, also in Galle Fort. Held since 2007, the Galle Literary Festival has become one of South Asia’s most anticipated arts and culture events. The first ever Matara Festival for Arts is scheduled for February 1 from 4 and The Matara Fort and over 30 local vendors & artisans will participate. ..Evening parties and events will also be held in Hiriketiya, Madiha, to Mirissa and will feature 7 performers/bands – Amila Sanduruwan, Baliphonics, Orange, Mango, Paloma, SDP ft. Paula, Rolex Rasathy and The Soul.
