Six suspects including MP Sanath Nishantha, MP Milan Jayatilake and Dan Priyasad, who were remanded in connection with the recent attacks near Temple Trees and at Galle Face on May 9 were ordered to be further remanded till June 1 by Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday.
Meanwhile,another six suspects were further remanded till May 27 and they are to be produced before an identification parade. The Magistrate also granted bail on four other suspects after being produced before an identification parade.
They were released on two sureties of Rs.1,000,000 each.
When the matter was taken up before the Magistrate, Additional Solicitor General Ayesha Jinasena appearing on behalf of the Attorney General’s Department informed the Magistrate that investigations have revealed that the suspects had attempted to murder.
ASG Ayesha Jinasena further urged the Magistrate to further remand the suspects, as investigations were continuing. She also stated that 454 statements were recorded including that of the Inspector General of Police.
She further stated that Court had earlier issued a travel ban on several individuals including former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
“It has been revealed that few individuals including former Prime Minister had not yet been handed over their passports to the court,”, Additional Solicitor General Ayesha Jinasena also stated.
“On May 8, Inspector General of Police had given relevant written instructions to SDIG Deshabandu Tennakoon regarding the information which he had received through Intelligence Unit. The IGP had received information pertaining to those two attacks prior on May 9”, she highlighted. The Magistrate also directed the IGP to inform Court regarding the failure to transfer Senior DIG in charge of the Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon as requested by the Attorney General.
