SJB playing to gallery with tax concession promises – Shehan
Finance State Minister Shehan Semasinghe said that the Opposition, which strongly criticised the tax concessions made during the era of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, is now making election promises to provide tax concessions under their government.
The State Minister pointed out that the statement made by Samagi Jana Balavegaya that the rate of tax on earning and the Value Added Tax rate will be lowered under their ruling, is only an election slogan.
He emphasised that if any party tries to lower the tax rates through irrational methods, it will turn the country backwards by moving towards an era of queues.
Semasinghe further said that money printing should be done to generate the lost income due to the reduced tax rates but however the provisions for this in the new Central Bank Act are limited.
He added that the Central Bank Act should be amended in order to do such a thing, and it is once again the government’s unnecessary finger-pointing in the Central Bank process and what the Opposition wants is to challenge the independence of the Central Bank.
