The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) yesterday urged the Elections Commission to take measures to conduct the Local Government Election  before next March under the powers vested in the Commission by the Constitution.

The SJB made this request to the Election commissioner during its brief meeting had with the officials of the Election Commission in Colombo.

SJB National Organizer Tissa Attanayake said the Elections Commission has now been given full powers to conduct the Local Government election at any moment before March 20, 2023.

He said accordingly the possible time has now come to Election Commissioner to decide a date for the Local Government Election. Responding to questions made by media Attanayaka said if the Local Government Election is held at this juncture when the country’s economy has fallen into zero and the prices of goods have been skyrocketed the SJB could win the election easily as people are of the view that only the SJB Government could reduce the prices of essential goods. Attanayaka further said after winning the Local Government Election SJB could pressure the Government the importance of electing a new Government to regain the prosperity since currently the Government has only the members who were rejected by people several months ago.

He also quoted recent UNICEF reports on the pathetic living conditions of Sri Lankan children and said over six million children in this country are suffering from malnutrition due to non- availability of proper nutritious food.
