Samagi Jana Balawegaya National Organizer MP Tissa Attanayake said the support provided by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to rescue the country from the abyss it has fallen into will never be rejected. He said this while speaking at a press conference held at the Opposition Leader’s office yesterday (17) .
Attanayake said, “An IMF delegation has arrived in the country. A delegation of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya led by the Leader of the Opposition participated in a discussion with them. Some of the basic points that were emphasized there were that the support given by the IMF to save the country from the abyss it has fallen into will never be rejected.
“We need it at this moment. At a time when all the opportunities to get assistance from the world are blocked, we are happy that the IMF is providing support in this way, but we are not satisfied with the measures taken by the government in this regard.
“Even now, the government is acting without transparency regarding the agreements made with the IMF. It is a sad situation for us that the government is not there to inform and exchange ideas with the Parliament and the opposition is taking the necessary steps in this regard. We not only informed IMF officials about this but also explained several other matters,”he said.
“The government’s restructuring plan is not clear in any way. We do not think that the steps taken by the government to sell public institutions is a beneficial step.
“We see it as a way of action to provide advantages to its cronies. However, we have no objection to immediate action on loss-making departments in the restructuring process. But the profitable ventures can be improved by efficient management. There is strong displeasure over the measures taken to outright sell off state enterprises.”
