SJB Parliamentarian Eran Wickremaratne yesterday said that they were urging the government to go for the IMF, before the situation in the country worsoned.
“We have no big objection to seek IMF assistance,” SJB MP Eran Wickramaratne told Parliament yesterday.
Even though some leftist parties have criticised this move, then they should have provided alternative solutions for the problems,” he added.
Speaking during the debate on the IMF report, he said that the government must not create any instability in the banking system through the local debt restructuring.
He said that all the countries of the world except eight countries have obtained IMF assistance.
We sought IMF assistance after the country went bankrupt. We were telling this government to go for IMF before this situation has arisen. We need to maintain transparency in this process.
However, there was no discussion with the Opposition about this matter. At least the government should have convened the Finance Committee If the support of the opposition was needed. But, the government did not do so.
He said the SJB was ready to support the government to stabilize the banking system and urged the government not to take any decisions that are detrimental to the members of the EPF and ETF.
