SL hope to win seven medals at Asian Junior meet, says SLA chief
We are expecting seven medals from Asian Junior athletic championship and five medals from Asian Youth meet, said Sri Lanka Athletic (SLA) President Major General Palitha Fernando.
The Athketic chief announced this at the special press conference to give their plans for the next two years .
We know athletics is the best medals prospect sport at the International level and we will focus on International meets and give all infrastructure facilities for the athletes.
I think juniors are our future and we wanted to make strong string team and will hold junior and youth trials this month.Our target is to give more opportunities for the young athletes to take part in international meets to improve their rankings which will pave the way to qualify for world junior championship,he said.
According to the SLA calendar John Tarbet Junior athletic championship which is scheduled to be held this month will be a selection trial while National Selection trials will be held from September 17 to 19.We are plan to conduct National sports Festival in November while another selection trial will be held next February and Junior and youth selection trials next next March.
The 101 National Athletic championship will be held on March 20-22 while this meet will be a selection trials for the Asian Games, Asian Athletic championship and Relay team competition.
We also have an idea to conduct Relay Carnival and Sri Lanka Grand Prix meet with overseas athletes. However our main focus is next year Asian Games, Asian Athletic championship and world championship, said SLA President Major General Fernando.
