SL schools excel at Varsity Boat Race in Malaysia

A group of 15 athletes from Colombo schools took part in the Varsity Boat Races in Putrajaya, Malaysia from October 3 to 8. The Varsity Boat Races is an annual event organized by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia. The event had a participation of around 400 students from universities and schools in Asia.

Over 12 schools from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Sri Lanka participated in the races in junior men and junior women catefgories. The Sri Lankan contingent comprised: Navithmee Perera, Sanuthmee Perera and Menoli Yatigammana from Diyawanna Rowing Academy. Havishka Perera from British School / Diyawanna Rowing Academy. Tashiya Perera from Diyawanna Rowing Academy.

Jaanya Kumarawadu, Ganindu Kirinde, Reshil Peiris and Nathon Gregory from Gateway College. Derion Spittel, Dimitri Nalliah and Oshada Haputhenna from Wesley College and Sulaiman Saleem, Kester Weerasinghe and Sanija Ganewatte from Wesley College / Diyawanna Rowing Academy. The team was coached by Nirmal Gunaratne.

Outstanding results were achieved by the team winning a total of nine medals. The individual achievements were;

* Junior women single skull – Jaanya Kumarawadu, a junior national rowing pool athlete (Gateway College) won Gold, Havishka Perera also a junior nation rowing pool athlete of British School / DRA won Silva and Sanuthmee Perera of Visaka Vidyala / DRA was placed 4.

* Junior women double skull – Havishaka Perera (Britsh Scool / DRA) and Tashiya Perera (Diyawanna Rowing Acvademy) won gold and Navithmee Perera and Menoli Yatigammana (Diyawanna Rowing Academy) were placed 4.

* Junior men single skull – Darion Spittel (Wesley College won Silver, Nathon Gregory (Gateway College won Bronze and Sulaiman Saleem (Wesley College) was placed 4.

* Junior men double skull – Ganindu Kirinde and Reshil Peiris (Gateway College) won Gold, Sanija Ganewatte and Kester Weerasinghe (Wesley College / Diyawanna Rowing Academy) won Silver and Dimitri Nalliah and Oshada Haputhenna (Wesley College) won Bronze
