The Official Recorder of SLA Saman Gunawardena said those athletes who returned good timings in the Men’s and Women’s 400m event at the recent trials will be selected for the 400m mixed relay event.
“There is no qualifying stand for the relay events at the World Junior Championships and that’s why we decided to select the best athletes and considered their times for the 400m mixed relay,” Gunawardena told the Daily News yesterday.
Seven junior athletes have been already selected for the World Junior Championships and this was confirmed by the Athletics Selection Committee, Headed by Wimalasena Perera.
Isuru Abeywardena of Ananda Sastralaya, Matugama, U. B. M. R. Bandara of Wekada MV, Wennappuwa, H. R. S. Jayasundara of Sir John Kotelawala MV, Kurunegala, Tharushi Karunaratne of Walala A. Ratnayaka MV and Sayuri Mendis of Holy Cross BMV, Gampaha were selected for the 4x400m mixed relay team event.
Sri Lanka Team for the World Junior Athletics Championships (subject to approval):
(Men): Isuru Abeywardena – 400m and 4x400m mixed relay, U. B. M. R Bandara – 4x400m mixed relay, H. R. S. Jayasundara – 4x400m mixed relay.
(Women): Shanika Lakshani – 800m, Tharushi Karunaratne – 800m and 4x400m mixed relay, Medhani Jayamanne – 100m and 200m, Sayuri Mendis – 4x400m mixed relay.
