Sri Lanka has been the host of the 37th Asia and Pacific Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations.

Agriculture and Plantation Industry Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that arrangements have been made to hold this conference in Colombo from February 19 – 22, with the participation of 270 representatives from 40 countries in the Asia Pacific region.

The Minister also said that this Asia-Pacific Conference will be the official conference in which the largest number of foreign representatives will participate at the same time after the huge challenges that Sri Lanka has faced in the last three years, namely the Easter attack, the Covid-19 epidemic situation and the severe economic crisis.

In this four-day conference, many discussions and conferences will be held related to new agricultural technology exchange, setting up an agro-tourism programme, implementation of experience and technology exchange programmes and collective solutions to problems that have arisen in the region.

The main event is to be presided over by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

All activities of this conference are to be done by the Agriculture and Plantation Industries Ministry and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations.

Sri Lanka representative of the Food and Agriculture Organisation Vimlendra Saran said that this is the second time that Sri Lanka will have the opportunity to participate in this conference.

He also mentioned that he is happy that he and his organisation are able to show support to Sri Lanka in a difficult time. Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera and UNFAO Sri Lanka representative Wimlendra Saran met the media on Friday (8).
