In an effort to discover and nurture hidden swimming talent in the Northern Peninsula, the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU) is set to conduct a three-day National Swimming Development Programme (NSDP) at the Kilinochchi Sports Complex from October 5 to 7.
Approximately 200 amateur swimmers representing around 20 schools and various clubs will participate in this initiative, which has received support from the Northern Province Education Department and the Northern Province Governor’s office. The program is open to swimmers from schools and clubs.
The program’s schedule includes sessions on Thursday and Friday after school hours, with a morning session on Saturday. Based on the swimmers’ talent and performance, SLASU will award certificates under four gradings, recognizing them as Advanced Swimmers. These certificates will be authorized by SLASU, the sole national body for swimming under the Ministry of Sports.
As part of this endeavor, SLASU aims to organize a tournament within the Northern Province districts, including Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Mullaitivu, and Vavuniya, within the next six months.
This tournament will provide a platform for these talented swimmers to showcase their skills and compete for medals and certificates.
“SLSAU’s Director of Outstation Swimming Development, retired IP Sugath Bandula, stated that the program’s focus will be on refining swimmers’ breathing techniques and styles while adhering to the basic rules of the pool for all four swimming strokes – freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly,” said Sugath Bandula.
SLASU President Major General Manada Yahampath will participate in the event alongside officials, and all instructors are drawn from the Sri Lanka Police and Civil Security Division. SLASU aims to produce national-level swimmers within a few years through such programs, as emphasized by retired IP Bandula, the Programme Coordinator.
