SLC not private fiefdom of its custodians – AKD

Member of Parliament and National People’s Power (NPP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is not a private institution, but an independent institution answerable to the country.

He expressed these views on Saturday (29) at a press conference held at the Janatha Vimukti Peramuna (JVP) head office in Pelawatte, Battaramulla.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) expects the cricket administration of every member country to be independent of its government. However, it is an independent institution belonging to the country.

“In the past, government institutions were said to be corrupt and therefore, it was hoped that these associations would be efficient in hands of the private sector. Today, top businessmen are running it.” “SLC Vice President is the owner of Nawaloka Group. Have you heard of the Nawaloka Group’s funds being misappropriated in that way? But they are misusing the money belonging to the common people. It has been proven that public institutes are not safe even in the hands of the private sector.”

“The ICC annually allocates money to SLC for the development of local cricket. The ICC also awards us tournaments every year. It is given to Sri Lanka, not to the Nawaloka Group or to SLC President Shammi Silva. A governing body has been established to independently manage cricket in Sri Lanka. If this is a private institution, it can be named Nawaloka Cricket or Dharmadasa & Shammi Brothers. The ICC will not give money to such companies. They are private cricket institutions.”

“Therefore, these institutions should be responsible to the country. This money is for the development of cricket in Sri Lanka. The audit report has shown that they have abandoned that role,” the NPP leader said.
