Sri Lanka Chamber of Medical Devices Industry (SLCMDI) is working closely with the Finance Ministry and Sri Lanka Customs to obtain tax exemptions assured by President Ranil Wickremesinghe for medical devices, which are very crucial life supports for patients, Tilak Fernando, the newly elected President of SLCMDI said.
He said this addressing the ninth AGM of the SLCMDI, during which he was elected as the new President held in Colombo recently.
Fernando said the chamber would assist the Government agencies to introduce a more effective tender process benefiting all stakeholders who are competing in the market as certain companies have moved away from the Government tender bidding system due to its cumbersome process and inequitable tender and contract clauses.
Fernando also emphasised the need for proper evaluation criteria for new technologies such as AI and robotics in the medical device industry. He also pledged to work closely with NMRA to resolve industry issues and expedite the issuance of long-delayed medical device regulations.
The global market of medical devices is currently valued at US$ 600 million and is expected to reach US$ 900 million in 2030, he pointed out.
Representatives from various Government and private sector entities such as the Health Ministry, NMRA, SPC, the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Sri Lanka Pharmaceuticals Manufacturers’ Association and the Sri Lanka Chamber of Pharmaceuticals Industry participated in the AGM where Chairman of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) Duminda Hulangamuwa and immediate past president of the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) Dr. Vinya Ariyaratne attended as the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour respectively.
The SLCMDI, established in 2015 with 15 companies now represents 80 members encompassing 90 percent of medical device manufacturers and importers in Sri Lanka.
