Sri Lanka Freedom Party Colombo District Organiser and Central Committee member Fawzan Anwer said the factions within the party should unite and face upcoming elections as a strong political force.

Speaking to journalists in Colombo, Anwer, the former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Palestine, said if factions within the SLFP unite the party can be reorganised to reach the level of its glory days within two months.

Citing the recent Ambalantota meeting organised by Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, Anwer said the large crowds were testimony that the masses are still with the SLFP.

He said the SLFP’s grassroots network is still very strong and has over 160 electoral organisers.

Anwer also said the SLFP should bring forth a “broad national programme” which could benefit the country and the people.

He further said the SLFP should be led by reputed leaders like former Presidents Maithripala Sirisena and Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Ministers like Susil Premajayantha, Nimal Siripala de Silva and Mahinda Amaraweera to embark on a new journey as a strong and powerful party.

Anwer said the SLFP will invite like-minded political entities to join hands. In future elections, the SLFP will only give nominations to candidates with a clean slate in order to end corruption and violence in the political system.

He further said that since the present electoral system was introduced in 1978, during the tenure of former President J. R. Jayewardene, SLFP leaders had engaged in numerous efforts to bring back a system which ensures a Parliament member for every electorate.

Anwer said if a SLFP Government was in power there would not have been a major economic crisis and fuel and gas queues as witnessed in the recent past, as its international connections with major powers were solid and unwavering.

He also said the SLFP was a corruption-free party and when in power was not hesitant to take action against even its ministers who had corruption allegations against them.

He said it was only the government led by former President Maithripala Sirisena which had pruned Presidential powers and as a result had garnered praise from world leaders and various international institutions.
