The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) said the party will field a candidate for the upcoming Presidential Election.

The SLPP national organizer Namal Rajapaksa said the party politburo decided to field a Presidential candidate of its own and the name of the candidate will be announced shortly.

He said that a proposal was submitted to the Politburo that the SLPP symbol should be on the ballot paper and that it was the best decision to take as a party and he said that the party has a responsibility to protect the Left wing political camp in this country.

The SLPP politburo met yesterday (29) afternoon and the meeting was held under the chairmanship of SLPP leader and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, at his official residence at Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo.

Speaking to the media, SLPP Secretary General Sagara Kariyawasam said that if anyone acts against this decision and runs for the Presidential Election without the approval of the party, immediate disciplinary action will be taken against him or her.

He also said the party will nominate the most suitable candidate who can win representing his party and said that the candidate will be announced within the next few days.

Kariyawasam pointed out that if someone from the party gets on a different platform, action will be taken against such individuals in the future.

He said that the majority of the Politburo was of the opinion that a candidate should be presented, and said that a very small number of people were against it.

Meanwhile, it is reported that 11 members of the Politburo including Ministers Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana, Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, Kanchana Wijesekera and Prasanna Ranatunga, State Ministers Kanaka Herath and Janaka Wakkumbura and Parliamentarians S.B.
