The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) has started a special programme to provide free medicines to needy people who have difficulties in purchasing medicines prescribed by doctors for non-communicable diseases including diabetes and high blood pressure.
SLRCS has made arrangements to hold 10 medical camps in the Colombo district under this programme initially.
This has been started considering the current shortage of medicines and the rising prices of medicines in the country.
This programme has been initiated with the financial support of EY Global Delivery Service who has contributed USD 25,000.
The SLRCS has made arrangements to provide not only medicines but free medical services as well for needy people suffering from NCD’s. Already three such medical camps have been held in Kolonnawa and Megoda Kolonnawa and Polgasovita areas and Senior Vice President of the SLRCS Jagath Abeysinghe said that the maximum support for the effort was received from family health officials, the regional directorate of health service, non-communicable disease units, as well as the medical officers of those areas, public health inspectors, to make these programmes successful.
