SL’s first TV news presenter Sumana Nellampitiya passes away
Sumana Nellampitiya, Sri Lanka’s first television news presenter, passed away at the age of 80. Nellampitiya began her career as an announcer on July 1, 1962, joining the radio as an assistant announcer and later working as an announcer for the Commercial Service.
Her distinctive voice became known throughout the country, and she hosted popular radio programs such as “Pibidena Gayaka Parapura,” “Florence Vasana Hatha,” “Ovaltine Pane Podi,” Cinema Promotion Programmes, and “Radio Sangarawa.”
Nellampitiya served as a leading news presenter at the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation for many years, earning numerous awards for her work. She made an indelible mark as Sri Lanka’s first television news presenter and had the privilege of being the first news presenter for both National Television and Independent Television at their inception.
She was also the first permanent programme producer in Sri Lankan television history. Additionally, Nellampitiya served for five years as a local announcer for the first Sinhala radio channel in the United Arab Emirates.
Her remains are currently placed at her residence in Torrington Gardens, Colombo 7.
The body will be taken to the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation for public respects on Saturday morning (August 10). The final rites will be conducted at the Borella General Cemetery on Saturday (August 10) at 4 p.m.
