Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel for the first time will diversify to the leisure sector by tying up with a leading boutique hotel operator, said Chairman SLT-Mobitel, Rohan Fernando.

He said that SLT-Mobitel will provide some of the unused land from their premises on a long term basis to this international company. “They in turn will either build on the land provided by us or improve existing premises (where there is a building) to international standards and market it globally.”

SLT-Mobitel will either take a lease from this company for the premises they provide or in some instances get involved in management of these boutique hotel premises.”

“We are currently looking at all options to suit the best method that should be adopted by SLT-Mobitel,” he said in the side lines of the Media Briefing to announce the launch of ‘Ceylinco – SLT Mobitel Ananthaya’ – a unique insurance offering from Ceylinco General Insurance and SLT Mobitel.

He also said that they have already started leasing out some of the unused premises belonging to SLT-Mobitel to companies like Pizza Hut and Commercial Bank and are in the process of identifying more idling properties to be given out under this initiative.

“Through this we are already obtaining additional revenue by way of ‘leases’ and we expect to muster around Rs. 500 million additional revenue to SLT-Mobitel from this year.”

He also said that they have had cordial discussions with the unions and other bodies before executing these projects which yielded positive results.

“Similarly, other government bodies too can take a leaf from us and provide their unused land and other infrastructure to the private sector and boost their revenue.”

He also said that they have also plans to develop and upgrade the Padukka Satellite Station for which they are looking at entering into the joint venture agreement with Intelsat to develop breakthrough solutions that advance and secure boundless applications.

Meanwhile commenting on this unique benefit offered to SLT-MOBITEL customers from the ‘Ceylinco SLT-Mobitel Ananthaya’, Fernando said, “We at SLT-MOBITEL are focused on continually enhancing the lives of our customers by understanding their evolving needs and offering solutions that are convenient and accessible.”

“To this end, we are pleased to partner Sri Lanka’s most popular insurer, Ceylinco General Insurance, to offer our customers a product that is simple yet powerful, which enables them to remain protected against hospitalization due to serious illnesses with no additional financial stress.” See also page 20
