SOC on an Open and Accountable Govt appoints sub-committee

The Sectoral Oversight Committee (SOC) on An Open and Accountable Government announced that an expert sub-committee was appointed to prepare a set of guidelines with the aim of making the entire Government service open and accountable.

The group of experts appointed to the sub-committee includes the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, Secretary to the Ministry of Justice, Secretary to the Ministry of Mass Media, Chairman of the University Grants Commission Prof. Sampath Amaratunga, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Colombo,

H.D. Karunaratne, Prof. of the Economics Department of the University of Colombo, Prof. Priyanga Dunusinghe, Head of the Business and Economic Studies Department of the University of Jayewardenepura, Prof. Janaka Fernando, Elections Commissioner General M.K.S.S. Ratnayake, Journalist Ashoka Dias (Sirasa Media Network), PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi, Chairman of Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) Manjula Gajanayake, President – Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement and President of Sri Lanka Medical Association Dr. Vinya Ariyaratne, and Advisor to the Chairman of the Committee, Dr. K.A Thilakarathne.

Meanwhile, the Sectoral Oversight Committee on An Open and Accountable Government also instructed the officers of the Management Services Department to give a final decision on the proposed new number of employees of the Samurdhi Development Department.

The Sectoral Oversight Committee on An Open and Accountable Government met recently at the Parliament Complex under the Chairmanship of Member of Parliament Jagath Kumara Sumithraarachchi.

The Chairman of the Committee said that steps were taken to appoint a sub-committee consisting of experts in relevant fields to prepare a set of guidelines to implement the national policy by focusing on the establishment of a public service that promotes democracy, good governance, performance, goodwill and accountability in relation to creating a more optimal and populist service.

This sub-committee consists of 21 members, including Members of Parliament. MP Udayana Kirindigoda has been appointed as the Chairman of the sub-committee.
