The Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau, which is conducting an investigation into a fraud involving Rs.9.4 million embezzled from an engineer, stating that money can be invested in a business activity on the Internet, has arrested an Army soldier and produced him in court. He has been remanded till October 27.
The investigation revealed that this deception has been done by stating that the first five million will be given a 16 percent monthly dividend for the investment, the second five million will be given a 32 percent dividend and the third tranche will be a 70 percent dividend.
The investigation revealed that this 55-year-old engineer, who is a resident of Wellawatte, was duped in an exchange of ideas based on an advertisement she saw on the internet.
A senior Police officer mentioned that she has credited this amount to several bank accounts on 19 occasions and Rs.7.2 million has been credited to three accounts of the arrested army soldier.
A senior police officer said that investigations are being conducted to identify the masterminds of this scam as it appears to be an organized racket on the Internet.
