Speaker appoints committee to probe assault threats on State Minister Gamage
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena yesterday appointed a committee consisting of MPs Chamal Rajapaksa, Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, Gayantha Karunathilake and Imtiaz Bakeer Markar to investigate the complaint of assault on State Minister Diana Gamage allegedly by MP Sujith Sanjaya Perera.
Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapaksa is the chair of the committee. MP Rohana Bandara and MP Sujith Sanjaya Perera also made complaints to the Speaker regarding the incident which occurred in the Parliament premises yesterday.
State Minister Diana Gamage making a special statement in Parliament yesterday that she was assaulted by SJB MP Sujith Sanjaya Perera outside the Parliamentary Chamber.
She said that there should be a formal investigation regarding the attack by this MP. If a member representing Parliament and a State Minister can be attacked this way, there will be a problem of discipline in the SJB. “MP Sujith Sanjaya Perera assaulted me near the elevator of the lower floor of Parliament. This was a violence against women. I want an inquiry from the Speaker in this regard. Legal action should be taken against this MP. I know SJB MPs have a big problem with women. People who have no discipline behave in this manner. Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said that this is a serious incident and Parliament should be adjourned for 10 minutes to investigate this.
According to a proposal made by the Prime Minister the proceedings of the Parliament were adjourned for 10 minutes.
