Special Dengue Eradication Week launched across 62 Divisions

A special dengue eradication week covering 62 Medical Officer of Health divisions across several provinces began today and will continue until September 19, Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit Dr. Kapila Kannangara announced.

The campaign is being implemented across the Central, Eastern, North Western, Northern, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and Western provinces, with the aim of preventing a resurgence of dengue cases as rainy weather increases the risk of mosquito breeding.

Dr. Kannangara noted that during the past two months, daily dengue cases had reached 1,200–1,300, but through coordinated efforts, the figure has now been reduced to 100–200 per day. 

He said that since dengue persists year‑round, the eradication week is intended to prevent another epidemic situation.

According to the latest surveillance data as of September 13, Sri Lanka has reported 97,637 dengue cases in 2026, with 74 deaths and a case fatality rate of 0.076%. 

The Western Province remains the most affected, accounting for 51,426 cases (52.67%), with Gampaha (20,742) and Colombo (19,235) districts recording the highest numbers. Other high‑risk provinces include the Southern Province with 13,030 cases, the Central Province with 9,104 cases, and Sabaragamuwa with 7,059 cases.

Monthly data shows sharp spikes mid‑year, with 23,334 cases in June, 21,965 in July, and 20,195 in August, compared to 7,896 in January and 6,721 in March. (Newswire)
