A letter regarding the behaviour of Sri Lanka cricketer Chamika Karunaratne during the T20 World Cup in Australia prepared by Cricket Selection Committee Chairman Pramodya Wickramasinghe has been leaked to the media which has created a controversy. The letter has created immense damage to the cricketer and Sri Lanka Cricket and Sports Minster Roshan Ranasinghe has ordered an inquiry into whether there is a deliberate attempt to tarnish the cricketer’s name.
If a cricketer has breached the Code of Conduct, then there is a way of dealing with it but this type of issue cannot be condoned and an immediate inquiry will be held, said Sports Ministry Secretary Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva.
Earlier, the Sports Minister had asked for a written explanation from the Chairman of the Selection Committee regarding the omission of Chamika Karunaratne from the Sri Lanka team for the Afghanistan series.
The Minister also had asked from the Committee if there is any truth regarding the allegation that players belonging to a certain religious group are being favoured in selections and Chamika was omitted because he had refused to join this religious group.
