Sports Ministry grants Rs 46.2 million to Sri Lankan Olympic athletes
The Sports Ministry is providing Rs. 46.2 million, the largest amount in history, for the Sri Lankan team of athletes who qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan and the coaches.Accordingly, the allowances and facilities provided to the athletes participating in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and their coaches are $ 15,000 each to three athletes who
directly qualified for the competition and $ 10,000 each to six athletes who qualified for the competition on a different basis (bipartite/tripartite and others) and this is the first time such financial assistance has been received by the Olympians.
In addition the Ministry has provided $ 5,000 each to six coaches of qualified athletes and provided business class flight facilities for all participating athletes for the first time in the history.
Also they will be providing a daily allowance of $ 40 for all athletes and coaches for the duration of the tournament. In addition prior to participating in the tournament, all athletes and coaches were kept in a bio-bubble at the Cinnamon Grand, a leading star class tourist hotel, to facilitate re-quarantine activities.
Describing the cost and facilities provided to Sri Lankan athletes representing the country at Olympic Games, Amal Edirisuriya the Director General of Sport Ministry said that the Minister Namal Rajapaksa had taken the initiative to give them the highest grant in the history of Sri Lanka.He was speaking at the Sports Development Department, where he was due to hand over the cash cheque recommended by the National Sports Council and the High Talent Committee on the instructions of the Minister of Youth and Sports Namal Rajapaksa.
