The Indian Government has invited Sri Lanka to dive into the BIMSTEC Youth Aquatic Sports Championship, marking a significant moment in regional collaboration. This invitation, extended through the Foreign Ministry and Sports Ministry, sets the stage for an exciting event scheduled from February 7 to 14 in New Delhi, as confirmed by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union yesterday.

Focusing on the Youth Under-20 category, this championship promises to be a showcase of swimming, diving, and water polo talent from South Asian BIMSTEC member countries. Sri Lanka is eager to take part, with plans to field three teams, as shared by SLASU General Secretary Mahinda Liyanage.

The SLASU Selection Committee has diligently crafted a 40-member swimming squad, featuring 20 boys and 20 girls, all under the age of 20. The diving team was cherry-picked based on recent Diving Nationals, while the water polo team comprises the same 13 girls and 13 boys who were earlier chosen for the postponed 11th Asian Age Group Swimming Championship, now set for February 26 to March 9 in the Philippines.

The venue for this aquatic spectacle is the SPMC Indoor Swimming Complex in Talkatora, New Delhi, boasting an eight-lane 50m pool and aligning with the latest FINA Rules of 2023. The week-long competition promises spirited displays of aquatic talent in a congenial atmosphere.

Ensuring a seamless and well-managed event, the Swimming Federation of India collaborates with the Sports Authority of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and the Government of India. This united effort underscores a shared commitment to cultivating regional bonds through the celebration of youthful athleticism.
