Sri Lanka’s Under-15 baseball team achieved a historic triumph at the ongoing BFA XI U-15 Baseball Asian Championship, clinching the country’s first ever victory in junior level, beating Pakistan by 10-9 in a thrilling match held at Weihai City in China on Thursday. Led by Daniru Dissanayake of Royal College, the young Lankan baseball players demonstrated their prowess in the seventh innings, securing the victory that etched their names in history. The gripping match saw Sri Lanka dominate the first innings 4-0, while Pakistan retaliated by
capturing the second innings 5-3. The third and fourth innings remained scoreless for both teams. Pakistan momentarily gained an upper hand by winning the fifth inning 2-1, holding a slim lead over Sri Lanka. However, the tide turned dramatically in the crucial seventh inning, with the Lankan team seizing the opportunity and triumphing with a 2-0 innings victory, ultimately resulting in a final score of 10-9 in their favour.
Sri Lanka’s journey in the championship began with three consecutive defeats in the initial round, suffering losses to Korea (26-0), Taiwan (15-0), and the Philippines (9-0). The series of setbacks relegated them to the placement tournament. The victory against Pakistan not only marked the country’s first placement match win but also reinvigorated their chances in the competition.
