Sri Lanka were eliminated from the AFC Men’s Under-20 Asian Cup Football Tournament Qualifiers when they were beaten 0-6 by the host nation Mongolia in their third and final match of Group ‘E’ played at the MFF Football Centre in Ulaanbaatar yesterday.
Sri Lanka conceded three goals in the first half and a further three goals in the second half as they finished at the bottom of Group ‘E’ with three defeats and having given away as many as 15 goals to their opponents This was also Sri Lanka’s third successive defeat in the tournament having earlier gone down to South Korea 0-6 and Malaysia 0-3 respectively.
Z. Temuulen opened the scoring for the home side in the second minute while G. Buyannekekh struck twice shortly before half time to increase their lead to 3-0.
After the turnaround A. Sodmunkh (60th minute), U. Temuulen (90th minute) and substitute Z. Lkhagva (92nd minute) scored a goal each for Mongolia. Meanwhile, South Korea qualified from this group to play in the 2023 Asian Cup Football Tournament in Uzbekistan after overcoming Malaysia 6-2 in their last match played at the same venue yesterday.
